What is an inverted Jenny stamp worth?
Background and Rarity
The Inverted Jenny is a 1918 U.S. 24-cent airmail stamp with the Curtiss Jenny airplane printed upside down. Only one sheet of 100 was ever found, and most of those stamps still exist, making it rare but not impossible to own.
Because of its fame, it is highly sought after by collectors. A single used example in fine condition might sell for $500,000 to $800,000, while a well-centered mint example can exceed $1.5 million at auction.
- Used, fine condition: $500,000–$800,000
- Mint, fine condition: $800,000–$1,200,000
- Mint, very fine or superb: $1,500,000+
- Position on sheet can add premium (e.g., center stamps)
What Affects the Price
Condition is critical: stamps with no faults, good centering, and original gum command the highest prices. Provenance also matters—stamps from famous collections can bring more.
The stamp has been counterfeited and reproduced, so authentication is essential. Only a few dozen are known to exist in private hands, and most sales occur at major auctions.
Common mistakes
- Thinking any old airmail stamp is an Inverted Jenny; it must have the upside-down airplane.
- Assuming all Inverted Jennys are worth millions—condition and faults can drastically reduce value.
- Buying one without expert authentication; forgeries and reproductions are common.
